Description

First performed by the Chapel Choir of Glenalmond College, Scotland, under the direction of Robert Gower, this carol for SATB and organ is now available from Stainer & Bell at https://stainer.co.uk/shop/cn34p/
It is a setting of several verses of a Lutheran Christmas poem written by the Wedderburn Brothers. The threat of King Herod slaying the little children in Judea is felt in the chromatic unrest that disturbs the tonal direction and the cutting short of young lives can be seen to be represented by the general pause on the first page which interrupts the first verse. Thereafter, the music becomes increasingly positive at ‘but I shall praise thee evermore’. However, the carol is wrapped up with the ultimate completion of the first verse, the solo soprano line floating away above rich unaccompanied choral chords.
